Ranking Every Numbers Films I’ve Seen

The Adventure Outpost

As of this article I have seen 2,814 different films. I know this because I keep an excel sheet of every movie along with pointless trivia that will please and astound no one but me. So instead of ranking my favorite movies I decided to go by the alphabet and rank every movie by every letter I’ve seen and today we will be doing the numbers. Of the almost 3K films that I’ve seen 60 have been numbers.

Before we get to that list however, let’s start with some pointless trivia.

Of the 60, 4 have been NR. 1 G. 2 PG. 23 PG-13. 30 R.
1 is from the 30s. 1 40s. 1 50s. 1 60s. 2 70s. 1 80s. 6 90s. 28 2000s. 19 2010s.
1 No Star. 8 1 Star. 19 2 Star. 26 3 Star. 6 4 Star.
4 Days, 17 Hours and 34 Minutes have been spent watching the numbers.

60. 10,000 B.C (Own)

Rounding out the bottom is the prehistoric action film from maestro Roland Emmerich of Independence Day fair. This is a rare mistep from him as even though none of his movies outside of ID are actually good, one thing they are never not is boring. Except this film. Although I have just seen it the one time in theaters when it was first released so maybe it’s time to revisit and see if there’s anything worth salvaging in this stinker.

59. 6 Undergound

The first Netflix film to find itself this low but certainly not the last is the over the top action slog from Michael Bay starring Ryan Reynolds who commands an elite task force team that have all been declared dead so that they can operate outside the rules. The plot is absolute nonsense, the action is tight, and the dialogue is brutal which is all par the course for Michael Bay.

58. 21 & Over

Surprise it’s another let’s celebrate drinking movie. These are a dime a dozen and all range from terrible to good to great and this one falls way down the line towards terrible even with a young performance from Miles Teller. These movies are all exactly the same so if you enjoy these type of low brow college drinking films then you’ll get the same amount of mileage out of this one.

57. 300: Rise Of An Empire

Not even an typical great performance from Eva Green and her awesome boobage can save this bloated, nonsensical and grotesque looking film. This is another that I’ve only seen once in theaters so maybe a revisit is in order but the first film this is not carrying over non of the charm or vast brutality of the first film instead just opting to copy over Zack Snyder’s filming style with non of the gravitas.

56. 28 Days (Own)

Sandra Bullock as an alcoholic entering rehab for ruining her sisters wedding and crashing a limo. What’s not to like? Well the rest of the movie for starters as she enters rehab for 28 days (roll credits) and must come to terms with the problems alcohol causes her life if she is to regain any control over her life. It’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen but it’s not one that sticks with you after leaving. It just kind of gets lost in the shuffle.

55. 17 Again (Own)

Zac Efron pretending to be Matthew Perry in a classic body switching film? Sign me up. I am a sucker for these types of film as they are always super silly and over the top and I enjoy a dumb movie every now and again and that’s exactly what these are. They know what they are and don’t try to be anything else which gives them a certain charm but they are in no way shape or form good films.

54. 102 Dalmatians (Own)

The live action sequel to the live action film we didn’t ask for. The 90s were just as irresponsible with live action disney films as they are today. This one is basically the same as the first film but with none of the charm or fun of the original. It is a completely skippable affair with the exception of a spot on Glen Close as Cruella De Ville.

53. 21 (Own)

Kevin Spacey takes a bunch of college nerds and teaches them to count cards to win big in Vegas and it goes about as well as you’d expect in a solid crime thriller that has its moments but mostly ends up the same way as 28 days becoming another victim of mediocrity. A film you’ll completely forgot you saw until you make a list like this.

52. 47 Meters Down

Another type of film I’m a sucker for. The shark film. This one pumps up the tension as two friends on vacation are stuck in a shark cage 47 meters down with no escape as a blood thirsty shark waits in the wings for its prey. It’s absurd, the dialogue is atrocious and the effects are pretty cheap but the film is none the less enjoyable as a shut your brain off and enjoy type of film.

51. 101 Dalmations: Live Action (Own)

The first live action remake of an animated film Disney tried. This film made the inspired choice to cast Glen Close as Cruella De Ville and she absolutely makes the movie worth watching in this basically shot for shot remake of the animated classic.

50. 2 Fast 2 Furious (Own)

Living life a quarter mile at a time becomes too much to handle for Paul Walker as he returns for the sequel to the better than it had any right to be Fast and the Furious. The stunts, the acting, and the nonsense are all dialed up in this film that almost knocked the juggernaut it is today off the rails before it could truly find its footing.

49. 15 Minutes (Own)

Robert DeNiro and Ed Burns star in this action thriller about a man looking for his 15 minutes of fame and the murderous rampage he’ll cause to get it. It’s a solid small scale action film in the vein of some other action films we’ll get to on this list. It’s by no means a bad film but it suffers from bad dialogue, nonsensical plotting and a giant heaping of mediocrity.

48. 3rd Man (Own)

The 3rd Man isn’t for everyone. It’s an old film from the 40’s, in black and white, with a slow burn thriller plot but for those that are into that sort of thing will find a lot to enjoy in this film. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Orson Wells but he carries this film with his stoic presence in ever shot.

47. 40 Days and 40 Nights (Own)

Sex comedies were all the rage in the late 90’s/earyl 2000s and they were either really good or really terrible. There was very rarely a middle ground and this film floats straight to the ocean floor of terribleness and it took a while for me to realize it as I loved this film as a kid but when you’re a sex crazed teenager of course you’d gravitate towards garbage like this but thankfully I’ve since grown and learned the error of my film ways.

46. 47 Ronin (Own)

Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada and sword fighting ronin style? Sign me the fuck up. I recognize this movie has many faults and is the victim of many of the things I complain about worse movies on this list but at the same time I can look past those faults in this film and enjoy it for what it is. A sick samurai movie with two of my favorite stars just kicking ass and taking names and that’s all we really need at the end of the day.

45. 16 Blocks (Own)

Bruce Willis must escort Mos Def 16 Blocks without getting him killed as he is a witness to some gruesome shit in another crime thriller better than it has any right being. I love when action movies can take such a simple premise and pull the goods out of it and this film, while still having many faults, manages to be an enjoyable romp none the less.

44. 30 Days Of Night (Own)

Vampire mayhem ensues in an Alaskan town as it approaches thirty days without any daylight whatsoever and the denizens of the town must survive the month without being massacred by the ravenous horde. This is another enjoyable movie that wrings the most out of its premise with solid set pieces and some good scares.

43. 3 Days To Kill (Own)

Kevin Costner is a hitman with only 3 days to live who must kill the group he used to work for in an attempt to reunite with his estranged family. It’s violent, brutal with an always dependable Kevin Costner. This was a return to form for him as before this film he had all but disappeared from films for a hot minute so even though this movie is pretty terrible at times, it was just great to have the screen legend back.

42. 12 Rounds (Own)

John Cena proves he can hang with the big boys on screen with an energetic, high octane thriller as he tries to outsmart a criminal he fucked over and save his girlfriend. It’s another simple plot that manages to wring a lot of mileage out of its star with some great set pieces and a solid outing from Cena that would ultimately prove why he was destined to become a big star on the silver screen alongside The Rock and Batista.

41. 13th Warrior (Own)

Based on the Michael Chrichton book, Eaters of the Dead, this film sees Antonio Banderas taking on a tribe of murderous warriors with his crew in this violent undertaking that was better than it had any right to be but still a far cry from how good the book was.

40. 39 Steps (Own)

Another old black and white film that will turn off most viewers, this spy thriller shows just why old school hollywood was the best hollywood with crackling dialogue, great set pieces that wring out huge amounts of tension and great performances from hollywood’s golden age.

39. 27 Dresses (Own)

Another genre I have a soft spot for is romantic comedies. They just go down like water and this is one of those films. It’s absurd, silly, nonsensical and utterly too sentimental but there’s just something charming about romantic comedies that I find myself enjoying even the worst of the worst. This one falls somewhere in the middle of that herd.

38. 48 Hours (Own)

Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy team up in this action film that helped cement Eddie Murphy as a tour de force in the action world with an energetic, funny performance and Nick Nolte holds his own as the straight man, which is a hard task to do but he makes it look easy.

37. 2012 (Own)

From last place to here, Roland Emmerich strikes again with an over the top assault on the senses. Using the ill fated 2012 apocalypse scare to create a gonzo film that lets him destroy the whole world, this film is so god damn silly and over the top and I love every second of it.

36. (500) Days Of Summer (Own)

Another rom com strikes here and this is one of the better ones to grace the silver screen as Zoey Deschanel and JGL play star crossed lovers in this journey of love. It’s not your typical rom com too steering away from too many tropes of the genre creating something unique that helps make the film place this high.

35. 6th Day (Own)

Arnold Schwarzenegger will forever be the greatest action hero in my eyes. I love all of his films, even the ones I recognize are not nearly as good as the others. This being one of them. It follows Arnold as he discovers he has been cloned and his clone is living with his family taking over his life and we watch as Arnold goes on a rampage to figure out what’s going on and destroy the evil corporation that let this happen. It’s over the top and glorious fun as only Arnold knows how to provide.

34. The 33 (Own)

The true story of the cave in that shocked the world, Antonio Banderas leads this crew through the harrowing tale of their survival as they live for 33 days trapped in this mine waiting for salvation. It’s a great drama to add to your list.

33. 28 Weeks Later (Own)

The zombie sequel to the superior 28 days later, weeks finds us following a new group of survivors as they try to survive the horde of the undead. It’s a solid film and a solid sequel but the weight of the zombie genre had already begun to sink this genre long before this film was released.

32. 22 Jump Street (Own)

The comedy sequel to the original film we didn’t know we needed. This film manages to capture the magic of the original while amping up everything else with a pre-captain america Wyatt Russell as Channing Tatums dumb jock buddy. It’s the rare sequel that manages to capture the spirit of the first.

31. 21 Grams (Own)

A gritty crime drama that follows three different people and their intersecting lives through the travesty of death and turmoil. It’s a dark, slow burn thriller that won’t please everyone but for those of you that enjoy slow burn films that gradually build to an epic conclusion will find a lot to enjoy here.

30. 12 Strong (Own)

Another post 9/11 film, this one more of an action front as Chris Hemsworth stars as a member of an elite squad that all ship out the day after 9/11 to hunt down those responsible and make them pay. It’s a solid action film with some character moments that help elevate the material but for the most part this film suffers from mediocrity that will have you forgetting the movie a few days later.

29. 13 Hours (Own)

Very much like 12 Strong is the film 13 Hours that follows the benghazi incident that left four americans dead. It’s a much more restrained film than Michael Bay is usually known for but he manages to treat the movie with the respect it deserves leading to a solid action film with an action star making turn for John Krasinki.

28. 61 (Own)

Barry Pepper and Thomas Jane got their chance to shine here as Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in their journey to break Babe Ruths single season home run record. It’s a solid film for sports lovers and non sports lovers alike. I never watch actual sports but I love sports films and this one is a crowd pleasure sure to please any avid baseball fans or just film fans in general.

27. 13 Going On 30 (Own)

Another rom com hits the list that also melds with one of my other favorite shitty genres, the body switch movie. A young girl wishes to be an adult on her birthday and wakes up to find herself 30 and Jennifer Garner and we watch as she struggles through life and learns not to rush through things. It’s a cute little rom com with some good laughs and solid performances from Garner and Mark Ruffalo as her best friend.

26. 10 (Own)

The only Dudley Moore movie I’ve actually liked sees him as a hollywood composer going through a mid life crisis as he becomes infatuated with the beautiful woman who just moved in next door. It’s silly, zany and the best kind of nonsense you could ask for in your comedies.

25. 1408 (Own)

A psychological thriller only the mastermind of horror Stephen King could drum up sees John Cusack checking into room 1408 to debunk the evil terror that lurks inside and finds way more than he bargained for as he must confront the horror in his life. It’s a solid thriller with solid performances and one of those films that won’t blow your mind but it makes for a good outing at the theater or a good movie night on the couch.

24. 3,000 Miles To Graceland (Own)

Two of my favorite actors, Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell, team up as they lead a group of ex cons to rob a casino during an elvis convention and it is every bit as absurd as you hope it would be, with great Elvis impersonations, hard hitting action, and great performances. Russell and Costner never disappoint and to get them chew the scenery together makes this movie worth watching again and again.

23. 187 (Own)

187 is a tense hard to watch film about the struggles of inner city teaching as Samuel L. Jackson plays a teacher fresh off getting stabbed by a student to return to teaching at a new school and the trouble that finds him in the form of these troubled students. It’s violent, tough to watch and utterly shocking at times but such a good film with a great performance from Jackson and a message that sticks with you long after the film ends.

22. 28 Days Later (Own)

The film that put the zombie genre back on the map. 28 Days Later is a pulse pounding, sweat inducing nightmare that brings the chills and helped make zombies scary again. Cillian Murphy leads this zombie apocalypse as he traverses a destroyed London in search of answers and survivors.

21. 25th Hour (Own)

I love me a good existential film about reflecting on one’s life and this film from Spike Lee ticks all those boxes as we follow Edward Norton’s character as he re-evaluates his life during the 24 hours he has left before he goes away for a seven year prison sentence. It’s a great film with great turns from Norton, Barry Pepper, and the late great Phillip Seymour Hoffman. A must watch for any film lovers.

20. 127 Hours (Own)

James Franco stars a hiker who gets his arm caught between a rock and a hard place out in the desert and has to come to terms with the hardest decision a person will ever have to make if they want to survive those nightmarish conditions. It’s another pulse pounding thriller that really makes you churn in your seat as you watch the film race towards its conclusion. It’s a fantastic film from Danny Boyle and an absolute must watch.

19. 21 Jump Street (Own)

No one ever would have thought that a comedy film remake of 21 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would work and yet here we are. The film is funnier than it ever should have been with star making turns from the pair and an early performance from Brie Larson. It’s a film that works so well because it skews and twists all the normal genre tropes you’d expect from a comedy of this kind and it helps separate it from the pack making it an instant classic.

18. 21 Bridges

The culmination of crime thrillers like 15 minutes and 16 Blocks is 21 Bridges. A film about a detective that shuts down all traffic in and out of New York City to hunt down a pair of criminal cop killers and the rabbit hole he finds himself in as he digs deeper into what really happened at his crime scene. It’s a great performance from the late Chadwick Boseman and a movie that highlights how sad it is that we lost his star prowess so young.

17. 10 Things I Hate About You (Own)

For as long as there has been shakespeare there has been modern retellings of his work and this is one of the best. A high school comedy; go figure, but it has everything you look for in your high rom coms with early star making performances from Julia Stiles, JGL, and the late Heath Ledger. It’s amazing when making this list just how many versatile stars we lost far too early.

16. 50 First Dates (Own)

The last great Sandler film before he fell off the reservation and started pumping out nonsense is the charming rom com 50 First Dates. We follow Sandler as he tries to woo Drew Barrymore who suffered a car accident that doesn’t allow her to form any new memories. It’s silly, over the top at times and features Sam Wise Gamgee in one of his funniest performances ever.

15. 101 Dalmatians (Own)

This disney classic still holds up decades later as one of the best the mouse house has ever put out with one of my favorite escape scenes a movie has ever put out with the dalmatians trying to make it back home as they are being stalked by the insane Cruella De Ville. It’s a classic film that deserves the love I feel it never gets, getting lost in the shuffle of more popular disney films.

14. 12 Years A Slave (Own)

This best picture winner follows a free man as he is made a slave against his will and held as a slave for 12 years until he is finally set free. It’s a harrowing, somber and downright hard to watch film that showcases the horror that our ancestors unleashed upon this great land. It’s a film I can’t watch too often but it is absolutely one that everyone must see.

13. 2 Guns (Own)

I love me some straight up, knock around action films and this one is a total slug fest starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlburg as they must team up to take out the villainous Bill Paxton. It’s got everything I look for in action films and features two of my favorite actors, Sorry Mark.

12. 300 (Own)

The film that made Zack Snyder, 300 is a gorgeous looking, brutal as fuck, homo erotic film featuring shirtless oiled up beefcakes as they make a desperate last stand to stop the Persians from walking into Sparta and fucking shit up. It features Gerard Butler at his most Butlery with an epic score, hard hitting action and some seriously weird eroticism.

11. 42 (Own)

The first film I saw that features Chadwick Boseman and made me a lifelong fan, 42 was the start of his journey as the king of playing real life figures. This film is another easy to ingest baseball film for any sports lovers or non sports lovers alike and features a left turn performance from worlds manliest man, Harrison Ford.

10. 8 Mile (Own)

Starting off the top 10 is the Eminem film 8 mile that charts his true to life progression as a poor down on his luck white rapper in detroit. It’s bleak, dark, and seriously depressing but features a better than expected performance from the rapper and a blink and you’ll miss it cameo from the Falcon himself.

9. 8mm (Own)

Speaking of dark and depressing films is the nic cage thirller 8mm as he investigates the dark and dreary world of snuff films. I saw this film when I was a teenager and even then when nothing could faze me was still shocked and astounded that a movie like this got made but that was the 90’s for you. We didn’t give a fuck, god I miss those days for film.

8. 10 Cloverfield Lane (Own)

A great sci-fi thriller that works so much better without the needless tie in to the cloverfield universe. John Goodman is at his best as the paranoid owner of the bomb shelter they are hiding in and it was great to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead finally get to shine in a lead performance. The film is a great tense thriller that shows just how much tension you can get out of a tight claustrophobic set.

7. 3 Days Of The Condor (Own)

A great tense 70s spy thriller from Robert Redford, this is another slow burn with a tense payoff that makes the movie so worth it. Nothing is better than old school cinema and this film is one of those benchmark films that showed just how good the storytelling was in those bygone days.

6. 12 Monkeys (Own)

Terry Gilliam is the king of bizarre thought inducing films and this one is no different with a great sci fi setting, post apocalyptic nightmare and a seriously gonzo performance from Brad Pitt, back before he just became Brad Pitt in every film.

5. 12 Angry Men (Own)

Another old school film that showcases just how good story structure was back in those days and that dialogue was king. This film is dripping with great scene after great scene with powerful dialogue that just charges you through the film to its final conclusion. I saw this film in high school and have been in love with it ever since.

4. 50/50 (Own)

One of the most bittersweet, uplifting and sad movies I’ve ever seen. JGL and Seth Rogen give great performances here especially JGL as a young man going through cancer and the struggle it entails. The strength he keeps during the film and the scene where he finally breaks down before the surgery to his mother is so fucking heartbreaking it gets me every time.

3. 40 Year Old Virgin (Own)

The comedy film that changed comedy films. This movie effectively made spoof films obsolete as the new king of comedy was Judd Apatow and his style of comedy. Just shlubby white guys cracking jokes at each other and it’s worked for the last twenty years or so. Every joke is on point and Steve Carell shows just how good he is along with everyone else. All the regulars of that these films would grow to have are here and they are all firing on all cylinders.

2. 1917 (Own)

An absolute feat of filmmaking. This “one shot” film is an absolute masterpiece in filmmaking and should be studied by everyone looking to create films no matter job you’re looking for in the business. It is such a gorgeous, well made, beautifully shot film with tense set pieces and shocking twists. It’s an instant classic to add to your war movie collection.

  1. 3:10 To Yuma (Own)

The best of the best for the numbers game. The western classic 3:10 To Yuma starring Christian Bale as a rancher who offers to escort renowned outlaw Russell Crowe to Yuma where he will board a train to prison. It’s such a good violent, bloody tale about the struggles of the old west. Crowe and Bale are on the top of their game and their scenes together make the film. James Mangold, the films director, proves here why he is one of my favorite directors working today. The film is an absolute must for any film lover and any western lover especially.

And there you have, 60 Films ranked from worst to best. With the exception of a few at the bottom all of these films are worth checking out, especially if you are a movie lover that just loves to watch new films. So get out there and watch some movies people! and until next time, Adventure On!
